i tend to agree here. it doesnt matter if you write from scratch or copy/paste your code together, in the end, if it works, its a success. to me, being able to use notepad++ dosent make you a 'dev', it makes you good at using notepad++

OI! :o I use notepad++ to code sqf. Does that mean I have to give back my 'dev' badge?.

Wow, this summed me up so perfectly. I am just starting to dabble in some of the bigger scripts now but for the most part it has been editing the current ones with my own logic. not much more. also the banging the head on the keyboard is really accurate. It took me 4 hours to get an external database working because i misspelled the name and took me that long to go check for that.

I'm right there with you brother... lol.

I usually take a break from Arma for the summer, which is when a bad dev comes along adds porno/nazi skins, messes up prices, breaks stores, and eventually breaks the mission so badly that it won't even start. Somehow even managed to reverse the parameter order to every single custom SQL statement I wrote. Then leaves it like that the entire summer until I come back to fix it. This had been a yearly occurrence due to the fact that the fake dev owned the domain name and enjin community. (Formerly s3k.us, now ultimatewarfare.us). A bad dev is one thing, but a bad dev with authority/power to break stuff is way worse.


Anyway, I personally fall into the "Sub Par Dev" when it comes to Arma 3 simply because I don't invest a whole lot of time into it. I'm a professional software developer, so I can pick up SQF and write new features fairly quick. It may just not be as optimized as something a "Real Dev" would create. New scripting functions get released by BIS often, and I don't really keep up with them.

And yeah I stole that Toxic Grenade script a long time ago :P

Similar situation just recently happened to me... I basically had to rebuild our server... it was so trashy.. set affinities up to run HC and Server on a single core practically, Vanilla'd my mission and added on 2 features from our old version, said he spent thousands of hours on it, blah blah blah... That kid is essentially why I wrote this post.

You just can't trust anyone anymore to fingerfu*k your server, admit they made a mistake, then try to fix it. They just typically hide it or run. All the devs that don't do it, well, they are running their own.

It sucks, but welcome to the new world I guess... man If only Old school Gaming would come back, you know, nice, non-media whorish, no troll, straight skill environments. I remember way back in the day, running an America's Army Server with punk buster and only having maybe 1 ban a week due to hacks and that was it. Now I have thousands of bans due to racism, sexism, hetero-sexism, bashing religions, hacking, cheating, exploiting, toxicity, and back talk to admins and who know what the hell else for. If only people would enjoy games, rather than just get a rise out of people. I feel the dev side is very similar now too.

BTW glad you like the toxic gas script...

You may want to add this to your description.ext file regarding VON and TEXT 'chatter'...

AKA, it only allows VON and TEXT chat via GROUP channel. Or you could disable them all and force players to use TeamSpeak/Discord for communication.

Is there anything lower then fake dev, if so that's me, I am trying to learn enough to start.. right now I mess stuff up and spend hours looking not for the , or ; but trying to find out how I broke it and how to fix it.. if I get lost or confused I come her and it's nice. One day I want to be able to pull up a messed up script spend a few hours looking, tweak it and hand it back, all fixed up and pretty.. but I believe I am years away from that.. but I do thank everyone here for what they do.. thank you
