Software tools for editing A3Wasteland

It took me about a year to gather together all the software tools that make editing Arma3 and A3Wasteland an efficient and enjoyable experience.  I thought I'd help newbies by posting a list of the free editing tools I find useful.  Please contribute your favourite tools in the comments.

Notepad++ is a free text/code editor with syntax highlighting and a cool plugin architecture.  This is where you will spend most of your time.

SQF Syntax highlighting plugs into Notepad++ and formats your scripts (colours, layout) according to the structure and logic of the SQF language.  This helps you find missing semicolons, parentheses, quotation marks and will save you *hours* of time and frustration when you're starting out with scripting.

The Notepad++ Compare plugin lets you compare two files (or two versions of the same file) and highlights line-by-line differences between the files.  When you make a change and things stop working, this can be used to compare your file to a known good file to see what went wrong.

TextFX is a plugin for Notepad++ that contains hundreds of text editing operations and shortcuts.  If you are trying to do a complex operation in Notepad, chances are that TextFX can do it for you.

Agent Ransack is a file searching utility that will find words or strings of text inside mission files and folders.  I’m currently learning SQF scripting by pulling apart other peoples’ scripts.  I'm using this tool to follow the logic of the code between the mission files.

PBO Manager allows you to package up your mission files with only a couple of mouse clicks so they can be run on a dedicated server.  Without this, you will have to use command line tools to manually build your mission files.

Bohemia Interactive have an online library of all the Arma 3 game assets.  If you want to know the scripting name of a vehicle or you want to know which magazines a weapon takes, this is the site you want.

There are also some online spreadsheets of Arma 3 weapon and equipment statistics.  These are useful not just for editing Wasteland but for Arma 3 gameplay and general knowledge.

GitHub.  Now we’re getting serious… GitHub is an online version control system for computer source code.  The A3Wasteland mission is hosted on GitHub and the latest updates and bug fixes are uploaded (“committed”) frequently.  If you will be maintaining your own version of A3Wasteland you will save time, headaches and *lots* of re-work by “forking” the A3Wasteland repository and using a desktop tool like SourceTree to manage your changes.  I’m far from an expert so if anyone can recommend a good introduction to Git or GitHub, please leave it in the comments.

I personally switched to Atom by Github. It has the SQF language as an install-able package in its package manager within Atom.
